I’m glad to see your response to this. I had only glanced at it in passing, and my reaction was that something was amiss, and that it felt like a debating society prompt or show piece or something like that rather than a serious argument. But I actually woke up thinking about it, because it hit me that it appears to be based on a literalist misunderstanding — a failure to recognize that tribalism in these cases should be taken as what in social theory is called a “Weberian ideal type.”
